Winner: Poem of the Week: September 9, 2007
Dancing with the dead
by backstreetdreamer
In a mellow summer requiem, golden
ballerinas danced at my feet
as I walked, crisp
faded
whispering memories,
begging me not
to forget
summer's song,
mischievously
plucking at
my trouser leg
to follow them along.
Dancing through a coppice, past
empty armed sleeping
skeletons, gently
swaying,
their goodbyes
longingly
lingering on
until the next time,
au revoirs
until we meet
when all is green
and all is sweet.
Pirouetting under shaded arbours draped
over with diamond speckled lace
curtains, the carefree
tarantella
slows to a waltz,
and weary golden dreamers
softly settle into
yesterday,
to play their part
when autumn reaps
the pillow where
the Dormouse sleeps.
Before the summer days are put to bed
my one delight is dancing with the dead...
