Yogi was the kid’s dog , but they grew up.
A big dog mix, nothing special to him.
Then, with age, his joints started freezing up
And we were just unable to ease his pain.
One wet cold rainy grey day, he wanted “out”
Did his duty, and in pain slipped in the mud.
He just could not rise…beyond any doubt
and he waited for me in the cold rain.
We tried and failed, that dog could not get up!
I called the vet with a dark, heavy heart.
He came, and I held that old, cold, wet “pup”
While a needle quickly “put him to sleep”.
No sound…but with his eyes, he said to me
“Oh…what…why?” and died.
It was a decade ago, you see,
But I still shed tears for that lonely moment
To a dog
