March's Winds
The howl in its first perception
Was but a murmur high in the trees
As they whispered unwelcome reception
Of something that could destroy their leaves.
The rustling uneasiness grew up high
And gradually filtered past branches and down
As what once were soft moans became cries
As destroyed leaves began to cover the ground.
I stirred, disturbed by the cries, only moans
Now to my wall muffled ears,
And then rose to the window, whose shutters groaned,
And stared upon leaves too young from branches sheared.
Then the shutters began their insistent knock
Upon my walls, loosed from their weakened latches,
Like neighbors demanding to visit and talk
About leaves and trees and flying branches.
I knew though my neighbors were elm and oak,
Disturbed in their quiet rebirth,
Insisting that if they must swing and sway, they must poke
And prod all things not part of their earth.
I stared wide eyed as the trees stopped thrashing
And, giving a long surrendering sigh,
Leaned toward me, reaching, intent on smashing
My silent view, sharing branches where no leaves remained to fly.
Then the stretching arms snapped back
As if a giant hand had slapped them away,
And all grew still, the sudden silence a new attack,
A new strategy, leaving anticipation for March’s winds another day.

I don't recall reading such a well-conceived presentation of the proverbial Lion.
"As what once were soft moans became cries
As destroyed leaves began to cover the ground"
Now that is great writing from the mind's eye. Well done!

Hello Tom it has been a long time.
This grand poem is the first I came across.
I love how you built from a breeze
to a full blown storm.

How much can I get away with and still go to heaven.

Re: March's Winds
i live on a few acers and am surrounded by huge trees ( in the midwest) this poem so perfectly describes the aticipation and readiness for the windy season ( tornado season) i'm sure if my trees could communicate they would all recite your poem in unison great piece

Re: March's Winds
An outstanding write...that brought me from calmness to a feeling of danger as those winds began to grow boisterous.
I like the wind and yet have a respect for it because it sure can cause havoc.
Love your work as always..
your friend Debbie

Re: March's Winds
The lion roars as if to show
it has more power than the trees
The trees don't mind because they know
the gale will fade into a breeze
when the month of march is past
and april showers take its place
the gales of march aren't meant to last.
The months progress at their own pac
each serves its purpose then it goes
This is the truth which the trees know
it has more power than the trees
The trees don't mind because they know
the gale will fade into a breeze
