Spice of Life: Meet bags123

Post by nekot » Sun Dec 16, 2007 10:18 pm

I enjoy variety and truly believe it is the spice of life. People come in the most varieties of all; no two are exactly the same. I believe each person has a significant gift to share and a unique journey to live.

The Pages are not lacking in these givers and journeyers who share their insights, joys, traumas, imaginations, hopes, despairs, fantasies, fictions, beliefs, and doubts via the written word in prose, poetry, stories, and quips.

I have laughed many a time and cried many a time, as I have sat with mouse in hand reading these Pages and sharing my own heart. Folks here are an inspiration to my soul and have been a catalyst for significant growth in my own life. I have witnessed a mutual respect among this variety of souls that if duplicated in our world, would make it a better place.

Bags 123 joined Poetry Pages on Feb 10, 2002.

Meet Gerry, Poetry Pages' bags123....

What is your age bracket: under 25, 25 - 50, over 50?
I'm 53, born 3/2/1954.

What is your name? Where do you live? What do you like to do? What is your occupation?
Gerald Francis Spoor,.... Upstate NY in the Northern Hudson Valley about 2 hours north of NYC as the crow flies. I'm a Sales Manager for a manufacturer of flexible plastics used in the packaging of food products. I enjoy music, reading, motorcycles, tennis, day hiking in the beautiful Catskill mountains, and the company of friends and family.

How long have you been writing poetry? Do you recall what led you, if anything, to start writing?
Started writing about 18 years ago as a way to try to express a very confusing time in my life following the failure of my first marriage. It seemed to help,.... and for some odd reason,.... I continued writing as a kind of therapy for life in general.

Have you ever been published? In what books or by whom?
Yes,.... in a few different anthologies,....The Taj Mahal Review, and Modern Formal Verse, are two that come to mind.

What inspires you to write? Is there a certain setting where you like to write? Do you listen to music when you write?
I write on a wide variety of topics,... usually while I'm working,... or driving in the car. I've always been a great multi-tasker, even before the term was coined. Plus,... I get bored very easily if I don't have a few things going on at once.

What is one of your favorite poems that you have penned? Would you mind sharing why or the story behind the poem?
That's kind of hard for me to answer currently,...I did have a few favorite poems,... but recently the hard drive I stored them on went ka-blooey,.... and I lost most of what I'd written. No big loss really,... if someone wants to read some really good poetry,.... I'd suggest they read some of David Bradsher's poetry here on Poetry Pages. Kind of makes any of mine pale in comparison.

Dang Gerry, this is hard. I'm perusing through your archive and finding stuff I've not read before. Here are a few I've picked out. I'll post my favorite of favorites first.

************************************************

A Poet Learns To Be Unread

Some poems disappear when critics advise;
"They should vanish before they are noted",
and impassioned poets quickly surmise,
that their verses will seldom be quoted

Though most labor on, and never give in,
to the fashionable trends of the day
They'll wear thicker skins, since critic's akin,
label everything "trite, and cliche"

A poet must learn, that all his concerns
are not shared by the prosaic masses
Like Byron, or Burns, they'll often take turns
finding solace in whiskey filled glasses

Just so it is said, by masters now dead;
"Poetry written will soon be unread"

Lost Connection

I was talking
on my mobile phone
in March
two thousand three

When my call
was interrupted
by some
abnormality

"Connection Lost"
These backlit words
appeared
on my display

I suspect
both signals
weakened
from apparent truth decay

Can these fancy,
high-tech gadgets
learn to
read a human mind?

Or does this new
convenience
make us lose
the ties which bind?

We're a lonely
high-speed culture
built on
new technology

It dictates
progressive movement
from a
life in jeopardy.

No time to
just drink lemonade
and watch
my kids play ball

No time to
sing a serenade
or hear
bird's springtime calls

No time for
family dinners
Regardless of
the cost

Now it's time
for a reflection
My connection's
just been lost.

Tall Tales on the Mountain

Ol Willy John's a mountain boy,
who was raised down in the holler
He eats mostly coons and possums
cuz he could'nt earn a dollar

"As bright as bricks" his mother'd say
"But not quite so well refined"
"He doesn't favor people much,
they're most usually to unkind".

Now folks roun here get chills oft time
When they see Willy shuffle by
They'll never look him in the face
a'feared and scared of "Evil Eye"

Still,... Ol Willy's got some answers,
that he ain't learned from you or me.
He communicates with spirits
deep in the forest, where he's free

And all them damn "Filozofers",
"Hell Fire Preachers", "Doctors"an "Greeks"
Just can't hold one tiny candle
To the truth when Ol Willy speaks

He don't use no big fancy wurds
Fact is,.......he rarely talks at all,
and when he deems to utter one,
its with an appalachian drawl

Yep,...He's one hard to figer out
In a world thats filled with conceit
He don't care for shiney baubles
and he don't lie, and scheme, and cheat.

His only friend's an age-ed buck
All the men-folk were prone to say
They've hunted him for years and years,
somehow,...he always gets away.

One feller tells a good story......
When he was hunt'en in the wood
He saw that buck and Willy talk
as he was hide'n where he stood

Now mind you,...these are mountain folk,
these campfire tales grow tall as grass
If you believe all that you heard
You'd think my balls were made of brass.

But,... I do believe in magic,........
and this mountain's got it's fair share
As long as Willy roams these hills
I'm convinced it'll be out there.

Omg Nekot, you actually did it. You actually made something happen that the rest of us have failed to do. You made the old irish fart blush. Kudos. That calls for a round of drinks.

I checked out your achive and wow! it looks like it is going to take me a while to read all. :book:

I enjoy very much the way you work your words, they are often full of truth and sometimes very funny!

It's funny though I never imagined you to be a sales manager...I saw you more as a traveler or painter...

Nice feature on a poet I respect and admire.

Bags, thanks for the kind words, too. I'm honored.

You're too late LS,.....I endured that in grade school,... to the point where I started to tell everyone my middle name was Frank instead of Francis. Now I like the ring of it.
