Spice of Life: Meet BeeJay

Post by nekot » Mon Nov 26, 2007 9:27 pm

I enjoy variety and truly believe it is the spice of life. People come in the most varieties of all; no two are exactly the same. I believe each person has a significant gift to share and a unique journey to live.

The Pages are not lacking in these givers and journeyers who share their insights, joys, traumas, imaginations, hopes, despairs, fantasies, fictions, beliefs, and doubts via the written word in prose, poetry, stories, and quips.

I have laughed many a time and cried many a time, as I have sat with mouse in hand reading these Pages and sharing my own heart. Folks here are an inspiration to my soul and have been a catalyst for significant growth in my own life. I have witnessed a mutual respect among this variety of souls that if duplicated in our world, would make it a better place.

Scroll down for a little spice from BeeJay .....

BeeJay joined Poetry Pages February 5, 2007.

From Baru, Poetry Pages' BeeJay:

Baru Gobira , 55, poet from India, often inspired by life's twists and turns, has been a serial entrepreneur and has been published in about a dozen anthologies from Anchor Books and The Forward Press UK Ltd. Baru has written about 300 poems and the series on "Thought" continues to engage his attention.

"Collaborating with my wife, Kousy, I have written a narrative non-fiction biography, “No Sugar, Please"--A Story of a Juvenile Diabetic, which spans more than 25 years of married life and some before it. I haven't gotten around to sending it for possible publishing, as it still hurts. I've recently started writing a book "Nelli The Roach" and have had fun conjuring up people reading "Roach Times in Roach Town," an interesting take on life for the kids. The first few chapters have had quite a few friends complaining they have to finish the story as I haven't sent them the next chapter. I've traveled many times to the United States and have found that we humans don't really differ...we only disagree in the same colorful language.

A favorite poem of mine that I have written is A Parrot Beckons, from my early years, pre-2004. Around that time I was attempting to keep writing poetry on a regular basis. [Do think about animal rights activists! We honestly had never thought of these things as they do in the current scenario.]

A Parrot Beckons is a real-life tale, a rare moment shared between my wife Kousy and me. [We've been married now for 29 years.] The poem recounts one of the most "daring/foolish" things she did during her school years in the early 60's. After hearing her regaling me with her exploits I just penned it down at one go and didn't change a word since then.

We both are from the same place and hence it meant a lot to us. We lived in a small ghost mining town promoted by those who shared the Legacy of The British Raj. This Mining Town called Kolar Gold Fields[KGF] near Bangalore [currently an IT Hub] had its share of small town closed community gossip. The bush telegraph worked better than the internet connection and there wasn't much you could do and getaway with in that place. The school journey was in a rickety bus and the social standards Victorian.

Anyway the poem brought back the landscape, the smell of the grass near the stadium, and we retraced each step to school once more in our memories. The times with our childhood friends, long out of touch, and the small things and the gossip and our take on the whole town made our day. It was quite funny, yet sad, and had its moments of sheer madness. A Parrot Beckons was also featured in one of the Anchor Book Anthologies."

A Parrot Beckons

With a skip & jump I went to Convent School
Twin pigtails swayed over grass & pool
Sometimes I caught the bus to school
At times I met a parrot & bunked school.

This Parrot was special, a friend of mine
Ever so happy to see me with a smile
He gurgled and squawked a great hello
Caged beneath the steps of a pavilion’s stand

Its guardian, old, bent and senile too
Still droned on & on to ask at last
Why play I, truant from Convent School
I’d shriek “Holiday from Math’s ” at School.

The hours I spent were sublime ones
The Parrot knew this could not last
I made it back to home on time each time
Spanked for sure when School levied a fine.

And with not many to support the cause
Farewell came with tears that red ears bring
Polly the Parrot was my only childhood fling
Last I saw Polly hopping, legs tied to a string.

Baru recently shared a snippet of his and Kousy's story regarding the struggles and victories of life, and the impact writing poetry has had on changing his perceptions and their circumstances. It's an inspiring piece about healing and finding one's heart. You can read it here:

Following are a couple of my favorites from BeeJay. I have read these a few times over, as well as some of the ones in the links below. They remind me of how precious life is...each moment to be savoured...

Freedoms Vest

When freedom rode once serene waves
I knew not, what be its true worth
When fears freezing winter threatened
I huddled near warm earth.

When school was far and distant dream
I knew not what it meant be read
When jobs were scarce & I grew up
I slid and fell like silvery lead.

When love drew near & called me home
I knew not what the hand had drawn
When gardens withered & rooftops shattered
I knew life somewhere was wrong.

When terror had stained youth’s blossom
I knew now, what peace was worth
When serenity rose from an Eagles flight
I felt fair winds sweep earth.

When at last I came home to rest
I knew not those, who stood the test
When the casket closed with me inside
I knew now, worth of freedom’s vest.

An Aloe Waits on the Mountain Side

I see the wind hurrying
From distant horizons
Like an avenging messenger
Bent on blinding my eye

I wait

Storm clouds gather
Distant dust
Painting the darkening tide.

I see

Fear that awakens in me
The dream that
Heartbeats fear.

I watch

Movements dancing faster & faster
Drawing me into a lattice of light.

I search

In the crevice of shadows
To resurrect frames from life

But find

Only a lonely Aloe
Battling life
As death trawls the mountainside.

Thank you, Nekot, for highlighting BeeJay's poetry.... and thank you, BeeJay, for sharing your wonderful words with us here at Poetry Pages........

... and his words purge up and outward,
expelled and onward through desert dust swallowed,
sands he says that gorge on simple sensibilities.
And, now he spits fragments, grit, extended vowels and elongated syllables
over cracked lips. Their sounds fall
piling round his boots…
