Spice of Life: Meet Spazway

Post by nekot » Thu Nov 08, 2007 5:01 pm

I enjoy variety and truly believe it is the spice of life. People come in the most varieties of all; no two are exactly the same. I believe each person has a significant gift to share and a unique journey to live.

The Pages are not lacking in these givers and journeyers who share their insights, joys, traumas, imaginations, hopes, despairs, fantasies, fictions, beliefs, and doubts via the written word in prose, poetry, stories, and quips.

I have laughed many a time and cried many a time, as I have sat with mouse in hand reading these Pages and sharing my own heart. Folks here are an inspiration to my soul and have been a catalyst for significant growth in my own life. I have witnessed a mutual respect among this variety of souls that if duplicated in our world, would make it a better place.

Scroll down for a little spice from Spazway .....

Spazway joined Poetry Pages September, 2004. She served as PoetryPages' Poet Laureate from April 2007 to October 2007.

Meet Sarah, Poetry Pages' Spazway.....

What is your age bracket: under 25, 25 - 50, over 50?
25-50 (I turned 30 this past July)

What is your name? Where do you live? What do you like to do? What is your occupation?
My name is Sarah Mueller. I live in Barrie, ON, Canada. I like to play word games like Scrabble and Boggle. I can often be found reading, doing crosswords, word searches, Sudoku, and other word puzzles found in the variety puzzle magazines. I love listening to music, spending time with family and friends, and volunteering at the Barrie office of the Canadian Paraplegic Association. And of course I love to write.

I work part-time for H&R Block as a Contact Centre Associate (I don't do taxes! LOL). I am trying to start my own small business offering tutoring, administrative/secretarial, and web design services.

How long have you been writing poetry? Do you recall what led you, if anything, to start writing?
I'm not sure exactly when I started writing poetry or even what led me to start writing it...I'd say I've been writing for about 15 years or so.

Have you ever been published? In what books or by whom?
Yes, I have been published. I've had a few poems published in my high school newsletters as well as one of the yearbooks in high school. I've recently been published in the new Poetry Pages book, Poetry From The Dark Side: Vol. II.

What inspires you to write? Is there a certain setting where you like to write? Do you listen to music when you write?
Many things inspire me to write: sights, sounds, events in life, but mostly emotions. Love is one of my major inspirations. Writing is a very cathartic and therapeutic experience for me. I write whenever and wherever the mood/inspiration strikes me. I love to write down by the waterfront whenever I can (which isn't a whole heck of a lot in the winter unfortunately). I listen to music about 99% of the time when I'm writing. I find that music sometimes helps me get into the mood to write and sometimes it offers me the inspiration to write.

What is one of your favorite poems that you have penned? Would you mind sharing why or the story behind the poem?
This is a tough question. I have a few poems that are really special and have a lot of significance for me:

Reminders - I wrote this poem following the birth of my cousin's daughter. Being unable to have children of my own sometimes takes a massive emotional toll. The night I wrote Reminders, I'd seen about 10 different baby-oriented commercials while trying to watch something on TV and the last commercial was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. I began crying and I grabbed a pen and notebook and suddenly this poem was born.

Inevitable, In Over My Head, I Should Have Known - These three were written during a period in my life when I realised that I was in love with two different men at the same time, one of whom was off-limits as anything more than a friend. I found myself very confused during this time and oftentimes overcome with extreme feelings of guilt and each of these poems helped me to work through those feelings (among other feelings).

Gone and Memories of Peri - Both are dedicated to the memory of my best friend, Peri. He died December 29, 1996 of a heart attack as a result of Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy. He was 21. Gone was written not long after he died. It was the only way I could truly handle his passing because it was so sudden. Memories of Peri was written around the 5th anniversary of his passing.

Reminders

They are everywhere:
A food commercial on TV
A screensaver on the computer
Magnets on the fridge
Toys on the floor
A message on the answering machine
Announcing the arrival of a newborn.
Reminders.
Of a little girl’s dream
That will never see the light of day
Every reminder cuts like a knife
The pain so deep, so powerful
It steals my breath away
Knowing I will never feel the flutter
Of a new life within
Never experience late-night feedings
Or sleepless colicky nights
Never be called “Mommy”
Or “Nana” later on.
Reminders.
Fill me with guilt
For feeling the way I do:
Jealous and inadequate
Feelings of guilt consume me
Because I don’t appear to appreciate
The small ones that I do have in my life
Reminders
Of three little angels
Whom I love with all my heart
And who light up my life.
And yet they remind me
Of the child of my own
That I want one day
But will never have.

Thats such a beautiful poem, sarah. I love it.
sticks and stones are hard on bones
aimed with angry art,
words can sting like all things
but it's silence that breaks the heart

Sarah and I have gotten to know each other through email communications. She is truly an inspiration with a heart filled with gratitude, seeing the good in others, and always with an encouraging word. You can read part of her story at this link. (Have the Kleenex handy.)
The Accident

************************************************
Somewhere

Somewhere there is an answer
To every question in the world.
Somewhere there is a mate
For every lonely person on the planet.

There is a cure for every disease,
A solution to every problem,
An end to every war,
Somewhere in this world.

Somewhere in this world
There is hope strong enough
For the depressed, abandoned
And desperate.

Somewhere in this world
There are people who care.
Somwhere there is love -
Something to believe in.

Memories of Peri

I sit here and stare out the window
Each rain drop on the pane mirrors the tears that fall.
These droplets that fall from the sky and my eyes
Are symbols of the pain I feel inside.
When I'm around others I appear happy, almost carefree
But I’m not. Inside I'm a mess. I'm falling apart.
You’ve been gone for some time now,
Yet it feels as though it were only yesterday.
I think of you at least twice a day.
I remember how it used to be:
You were always smiling and laughing.
Always singing off-key,
But you always put some of yourself into every song.
I remember your sympathetic ear and broad shoulder.
You always knew when to kick my butt in gear
And never took “I can’t” or “It’s hopeless” as an excuse
For any failure, whether your own or someone else’s.
You joie de vivre was contagious and so was your courage.
I wish I had some of that courage because I need it
To help me move on with my life.
Sometimes I wonder whether I will ever be able to
Live my life without you by my side.
I know in my mind that I will be able to do that
Yet my heart, well, that’s a different story.
I know the pain is going to ease a little more each day
But sometimes I wish it would go away completely.
I know it won’t go away completely until I join you
Because until you and I are reunited in “Paradise”
You will live here on earth through me
Because I will always carry our memories and moments in my heart.

Spaz's writing always rocks. She writes from the heart not just the mind. And that's what I like about her writing. A lot of her work is very heart felt and emotional. She has a way of making you feel the same emotion she does through her writing. To be quite honest not a lot of poets/writers an do that. :thewave:
