Spice of Life: Graeme

Post by nekot » Thu Oct 18, 2007 8:54 pm

I enjoy variety and truly believe it is the spice of life. People come in the most varieties of all; no two are exactly the same. I believe each person has a significant gift to share and a unique journey to live.

The Pages are not lacking in these givers and journeyers who share their insights, joys, traumas, imaginations, hopes, despairs, fantasies, fictions, beliefs, and doubts via the written word in prose, poetry, stories, and quips.

I have laughed many a time and cried many a time, as I have sat with mouse in hand reading these Pages and sharing my own heart. Folks here are an inspiration to my soul and have been a catalyst for significant growth in my own life. I have witnessed a mutual respect among this variety of souls that if duplicated in our world, would make it a better place.

Scroll down for a little spice from Graeme .....

:hello:

Graeme joined Poetry Pages on March 17, 2007.

From Susan, Poetry Pages' Graeme:

My name is Susan Patton, and I am 63 years old. I've been married for 43 years to my husband Kim, and we have 3 children and 7 grand children.

I was born and raised in the Paradise state of Ohio, and since my marriage have been transplanted to: Oklahoma, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan, California, and Arizona.

I am an Ohioan and judge beauty by green and trees, although the blue skies of Arizona are awesome.

I have been a junior high school language arts teacher for 20 years. Before that ( in reverse order) I was: a marketing representative, real estate agent, office manager, interior designer, and beautician.

Most of my career changes came with corporate moves that we made for my husband's job. Since most of my professions required state licensing, I always figured if I had to sit through classes again, I might as well learn something new. My teaching certification was transferable from California to Arizona.

My hobbies are writing poetry, reading, crocheting, counted cross, making bunnies and cloth dolls, and drawing.

I am trying to convert my black thumb into something useful and change my desert landscape into desert garden. So far the brambles and weeds are winning - but I will conquer this.

My favorite poem is the poem I am working on. I love it like a baby, and once it's developed I smile, bless it and move on to the next poem.

Life inspires me. I see something, remember a moment, hear a phrase, smell a special scent, and my muse moves me to write. Of course, sometimes that temperamental muse just flits to another part of my soul so then I draw, or paint or . . . . .

I have quite a few favorites from Graeme's collection. Just today I used the word "oralpedism." It proved quite the conversation piece.

Following are two of my favorites: Chain Link Memories and Oralpedism.

If you have any of Graeme's poetry you'd like to present, feel free to do it here. I'll endeavor to find a link to that poem and add the link to your comment.

Chain Link Memories

I sit on a bench
The sun warm on my face
The breeze has a hint of salt water
I raise my hand to shade my eyes
And there he is- blond hair bleached white
Hands raised into the air
Sturdy toddler legs staunchly set
Against an in-coming wave of the Atlantic
I raise my hand to wave

And he waves to me from
A line of smiling second graders
Singing “We wish you a Merry Christmas”
Each to his own rhythm
Each to her own tune
He finishes to thunderous applause and bows

Bows to kiss his new-born sister
Lightly on her forehead
And so begins the rhythm of their lives
He bravely leads the way
And she races to keep up
Sometimes running - sometimes cheering

Cheering him to victory
As he races around an oval track on a 50cc Honda
Winning his first race
When the other two 8 year olds
Crash into each other on the final turn
He turns to me thumps up - So proud of himself

So proud of this American Eskimo
The hard earned puppy snuggled in his arms
Today it was worth while to complete those chores
That empty kitty liter box won him the prize
Gandolf the White – his precious Gandy Dancer
And he eagerly accepts this new responsibility

Just as he graciously accepts
The crowd’s standing applause for his part
In the high school musical
The timber of his voice still ringing through the hall
This my first encounter with his love for music
We sometimes struggle through our first encounters

Especially the inevitable encounter
With college separation
Tempers flair – angry words are spoken
Which hurts more – which pain is more defining
His fear of leaving - Or my fear of losing him
Still his future rushes in and snatches away pieces of me

Now he comes to me in tiny snatches
Pieces of his life – shared via
Telephone calls across miles of separation
Brief visits during trips too short
To fill in those empty places in my heart
And yet my heart is so full it feels like it will overflow

I sit on a bench
The sun warm on my face
The breeze has a hint of new mown grass
While I watch my son on the shore of a pond
Reeling in a 6 inch blue gill
With his blonde-haired son
Tightly gripping the cane pole
His sturdy toddler legs staunchly set
Against the weight of the incoming fish
I raise my hand to wave . . .

Oralpedism

It was such a tiny nibble,
hardly worth mentioning.
Honest
I couldn't help my self.
I was amazed at how
quickly I did it,
metatarsals,
tarsals
slid in so easily.
Suddenly
I was choking
wishing I could spit
the whole thing out
wondering
what could have
possessed
me.

:hearts: Thank you, Nekot, for featuring me. I so miss coming to the pages each day - but the internet service here just bounces me off if I stay on longer than about 5 minutes.

Things are moving along with Mom as nature and those damnable cancer cells would expect. I cherish my time with her.

Best wishes to all of you, and I be back soon.
This above all to thine own self be true.
