Come Home, Lisa Jean

A stack of bills that scream to be paid
Sounds of a fight from the living room
Floor needs the light caress of a broom
Phone ringing shrill, batters my ears
Headache just about to bring me to tears
"Hi Lisa Jean. Just checkin in.
Wanna know what ya done, who you're with, where ya been."
"Oh hi momma. How are things with you and dad?
Last time we spoke his knee was gettin' bad."
"Knee's just fine. He just likes to grouch.
Gives him somethin' to do while he's lyin' on the couch."
"That's good momma. Now I gotta feed the girls.
Need to get 'em in the bath, shampoo all the curls."
"Alright hon. I'll catch ya somewhere in between.
And if you feel the need, you come on home Lisa Jean."
Sink into a chair the pot stutters and steams
Wonder how life can have so many extremes
Scraping out a living while making my mistakes
Sapped of all the energy just getting by takes
Foreclosures on the future, collectors getting mean
"If you feel the need, you come on home Lisa Jean."
Drugs and booze aren't answers, I must've tried them all
They'll make ya feel like giving up, take you for a fall
One night stands and sleazy dives and feeders on your soul
Another line, salt and lime, let the good times roll
When it finally hits you, your life is in the tank
Last month's rent went up your nose and all that booze you drank?
That could've fed the children, could have bought new clothes
But now it's gone and how you'll pay the phone bill, heaven knows
You think you've got the answers, you'll make it out all right
Just need one more shot to help you make it through the night
But in those sober moments, growing few and far between
An echo from the past says "Come on home now Lisa Jean."
Feeling like a failure, a loser from the dregs
You crawl back home to momma with your tail between your legs
Open door, looking at you, doesn't even need to ask
Takes you in with open arms, ready for the task
"I do believe that you're the sorriest sight I've ever seen.
But everything will be alright, you're home now Lisa Jean."
