Curtailed Quaintrelle

Post by heinzs » Thu Aug 25, 2011 12:50 pm

I stole this from AllPoetry.com. I think it's a cool form, so would love to see someone try it.

Write a Curtailed Quaintrelle which is a shortened sonnet version of xxDreamWeaverxx's Quaintrelle

Who blew his horn in curtailed frock
and called to church our little flock?
That archangel, dear Gabriel
of Crown Point, White Church Road.

He blew towards North, South, East and West
but flew away till the arrest
of antique dealers who were stealers—
to highest bidder sold.

He was returned after the chase
but with a price too high to place
him back atop that little stop
along the White Church Road.

Beneath the long-gone lightning ball
another angel weathers all.

© Marcy Jarvis

An heirloom weathervane in upstate NY was stolen and then recovered, only to be housed in the Shelburne Museum for a short time before the people of this small town decided he was too expensive to insure, one reason being his short frock.

How to write this sonnet variation:

Lines 1 & 2 are 8 syllables long and rhyme with each other.
Line 3 is also 8 syllables long and contains internal rhyme on the 4th and 8th beat.
Line 4 is short (6 syllables) and need not rhyme.

Now repeat this formula 3 times
and end with a rhyming couplet.

You may rhyme all three short 6 syllable lines with each other, though you don't have to,
and you may extend the lines to 9 syllables if you are working with feminine rhyme, which is fitting for a short frock.

Before I Say That I Have Tried

Before I say that I have tried,
but in defeat admit I've lied,
and often been, to my chagrin,
my own worst enemy

We all have our forsaken sins
which live their secrets deep within,
and only we can ever be
aware that they're still there.

So if I must, I'll only say;
I've had some luck along the way,
and now I'm old,...or so I'm told
by people that I love

Putting behind me what has been
Perhaps one day I'll try again.
