What a Censor is
by Drew Rush
In tribute to a poem none of you will ever see...
They sat quiet at the dinner table
Placid faces on them all
They never heard the words
They never had the chance to react
Because they sat in silence
This ship left to rot in dry dock
Its flags not meant to fly
And its sails never to catch the air
And its hull never to cut the waves
Because they left it on land
The book sat upon the shelf
Dust covered and not once opened
They never saw the words
They never had the chance to see
Because it sat untouched
The child grew but didn’t mature
Blank faces is all he showed
He was never taught a word
He was never given a touch
Because it would have taken effort
She sat quiet at the dinner table
None of them spoke a word
Always in fear of upsetting the silence
Always in fear of offending the peace
Because it’d scar the innocence
