In The Pouring Rain
by Preston

She often spoke of standing in the rain
Wondering if the water would wash her cares away
Cleanse her spirit and purify her soul

~

Last night I fell asleep to the sound of falling rain
I dreamt of waterfalls and tidal pools
Of Polynesian princesses and footprints in the sand
Highways of sparkling black water stretching off into the distance

I woke to find her standing at the window
Staring out at the rain
Another sleepless night
Sitting in the darkness
Wrestling with her demons

She says, I think I'm going to do it
Looking at me with those schoolgirl eyes
Seeking my approval

I say, I think you should
Even if it doesn't leave you feeling cleansed and purified
There'll be a feeling of excitement
Your heart racing
A certain sense of wonder
At the beauty and the power
With the lightning and the thunder all around
And the rain pouring down
Nourishing your spirit
Nourishing the land

Trying to decide just how long you're going to stand there
In the pouring rain

Wondering what people would think if they saw you standing there
In the pouring rain

Maybe even feeling a little foolish standing there
On the outside … looking in

Thinking how nice it will be to be back inside
Where it's warm and dry
Standing at the window
Smiling to yourself
A cup of hot tea in your hands
On the inside … looking out
At the pouring rain

~

Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly.
