Conversation at Artists' Rock

by Bags123

As a child
I played on forested domes
and rocky crags
Oblivious to
panoramic vistas
stretching under my
sneakered feet

My senses
of course,... were niave
Native to this land
for generations
Never suspecting
the whole world
wasn't a paradise

at this very spot
I spoke with my father
He's gone now
these many years
Still our voices linger
at Artists Rock.

"Daddy...
why do they call this place
Artists Rock"?
"Well son...
I reckon it's cause
them artist fellas come up here
to get inspired".

"Daddy...
Why come way up here?
Can't they get that
where they live"?
"No son...
I guess it's hard to come by
in the city".

"Daddy...
they hike way up here
just to get perspired?
Shoot Daddy,
you could sell'em
some of yours
for a quarter".

"HA!!!...yes indeed, I could son,
worth every penny too.
Prob'ly do'em good
to smell some honest sweat!
No boy,... I'm talk'en
INSPIRE,
not perspire".

"You see son...
when a person removes hiself from nature
it kinda leaves him behind too.
Artists come way up here
hope'n to
remember how it
feels again".

"Don't make no sense to me
why anybody'd leave
I can't pretend to ponder
the where-with-all of it.
They just forgot
how to see through
the eyes of God".

"Daddy...
Can I see through the eyes of God"?
"Not yet son...
But I hope someday
when you're a man
they'll be wide open
for you".

40 years later
I'm sitting here again
Remembering Dad,
simple man that he was
Still waiting...
for them to one day
open for me.
