Haiku

Post by midnight_kitty_kat » Mon Apr 01, 2013 12:09 pm

Ah My Bittersweet Moon
Drearily Bouncing Bewitching Beams
Soundless in Evenings Air

I'm not terribly familiar with any form poetry. Is this a haiku??

Traditional haiku (in English) are of the format 5-7-5 syllables. If they contain some reference to a season of the year they may be considered haiku. Otherwise they are actually senryu, but no one makes that distinction except the purist. I don't know many of those... thank goodness.

Here's an example of haiku and senryu:

haiku:

In chilly winter,
Cones of white frost are forming,
Ending autumn's reign.

senryu:

Through the dark, I searched.
With fingers stretching, I reached.
Touching smoke, I wept.
