Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi
what it is it like to look through your eyes
to look out the door through prison bars
but not step across the threshold
the weight of the country
resting in your heart

Aung San Suu Kyi
you are the hope of your people
the flame that shines through you
lights up a world of darkness
the soul of a poet tinged with sadness
and the spirit of a woman warrior

Aung San Suu Kyi
may your penance benefit all beings
may your trials liberate all beings
may you some day cross the threshold
to cheering throngs
climb the steps of Shwedagon Pagoda
fly the prayer flags of freedom
and ascend your throne as Avalokiteśvara
Bodhisattva of compassion

Aung San Suu Kyi
may the strength of a woman
outlast the hardness of your captors
may your soul be a bird free from the cage
may your tears be prayers
like doves turned loose in the wind
may your sorrow be scarce as the snow leopard in winter
may you taste the wine of freedom in your lifetime
may your courage bring compassion and forgiveness
for your captors

Aung San Suu Kyi
it takes only one small flame
to keep the world from darkness
may your flame melt the coldest hearts
like a wildfire spreading out of control
burn brightly
shine on

NEWS FLASH:
November 13, 2010

she did it! unbelievable! she's free!
they let her out
will wonders never cease?
like Gandhi and Mandela,
the power of her will
inside those tiny bones
overcame an entire army
the ripples from her heart
created a tsunami
the whole world is watching now
and waiting

UPDATE:
December 2, 2011

fast-breaking news -
whoever thought we would see Hillary Clinton
arm in arm with Aung San Suu Kyi
like sorority sisters needing dates
for homecoming weekend
it’s the best thing that’s happened to Burma
since Alec Guinness watched in shock
as they blew up the bridge on the River Kwai
good things may come of this
stay tuned…

April 1, 2012

she is elected to the Burmese parliament
if this was the US she would be on Oprah, Letterman, or Saturday Night Live

June 16

she accepts the Nobel Peace Prize 21 years after it was awarded
stories like hers are too rare in this world of hatred and greed
she walks in the footsteps of Schweitzer, Dr. King, and Mother Teresa
showing us hope for the world
there is hope
