Forget that I’m a middle-aged woman,
a mother and wife, bound
to the Earthly realities
of our conceited times.
I could be a hobbit…
Frodo Baggins! Or Pippin,
or even Samwise! I would be brave,
but scared most of the time,
when darkness dogged
my hairy heels, and freaked my mind
with walking Dread, my sword I’d clasp
as I fight back, cleaving to virtues loft.
I could be an elf…
A maiden, dark-haired and lithe,
I’d fall in love with a handsome prince,
Aragorn, whose bloodline runs true and pure.
My strength of self would serve all well,
I’d give my life for his loving eyes,
but in the end, find grace. Or, picture this,
a warrior strong, heir to a White City's towered
lands, honored vanguard, we
who never sleep, for evil’s reach grows long.
Battles, and battles, will end my life,
But honorably, I die.
I could be a wizard…
Gandalf’s kin, a daughter unknown,
Gandafree could be my name.
My father’s staff, which was sapling-backed,
has always been my pride. I dreamed
of a time, events divined, I helped him
in his fray, with Balrog’s whip,
unseen, I slipped
between the two that day.
Sigh…I could be a dwarf, an orc,
an Arkenstone, or Moria’s depths,
or tears that were kept,
maybe Sauron’s eye or
Frodo’s fresh-maimed hand.
Instead, I am me.
But, I could be a hobbit…

In honor of J.R.R. Tolkien, my first love affair with a book began with "The Hobbit", expanded to include "The Lord of the Rings". And has continued to this day.
Could I Be A Hobbit?

Wonderful! I too am a lover of the Lord of the Rings. Read as a kid and reread as an adult. Anxiously waiting for the Return og the King to come out next week. Christmas gifts this year will likely be filled with hobbits and elves and the like for both me and my better half, Ian.

this is so great! I too discovered the Hobbit at a younger age in the library. It was the first "thick " book I read, rather intimidating by its size, But I fell into a world of imagination I was unaccustomed to, that and the following triology had me enthralled and still weave their magic.
