There's a Sonnet in my Bonnet!

Post by totsakanth » Sun Sep 08, 2013 11:48 pm

Hi all. I've been unable to post for some time but at the moment a little time to spare...

There's a Sonnet in my Bonnet

There's a sonnet in my bonnet and it will not go away.
I thought I'd write this morning, just a simple bardic lay.
I've tried until I'm weary and my eyes are getting bleary
So clearly It's the blasted sonnet causing the delay!

Then I chose another metre, maybe one a little sweeter
than a sestet and a volta in a rusty penta-meter,
But instead of dithyrambic it was ending up iambic
And I cried as I deleted it to try for something neater.

There's a sonnet in my bonnet and it doesn't want to leave.
I've told it I don't want it but it simply won't believe
That a weepy little triolet composed upon a violet
Is better than a sonnet on a chilly winter's eve.

Well something more archaic, like some verses elegaic
Of love amidst the Pyramids in carvings Ptolomeic?
Or a middle east rubaiyat - that should keep the sonnet quiet
But nothing works so now I must return to the prosaic.

There's a sonnet in my bonnet and it's been there for a while
Yet now I want to try to write in quite another style,
I'm trying to evict it but I simply can't restrict it
To a piece of crumpled paper in a long forgotten file.

I tried to write an ode on a hero all in woad
Who battled without fear and the ancient world bestrode
Then my fledgeling ode pindaric was transformed in ways barbaric
And now I have to try to find another poet's road.

There's a sonnet in my bonnet and it says it's here to play
And it doesn't want to leave me now whatever I may say.
I've been a rotten poet and so now I have to pay
There's a sonnet in my bonnet and I think it's here to stay!

And if I don't kill myself over the next 6 months maybe I can annoy you all further.
