The Visitor

He appeared at my door
damp, and dirty,
but trusting that perhaps
I'd give shelter tonight

To a well storied man,
who's traveled from lands
where the natives possessed
second sight

In return he would proffer
a very old tale,
which he'd heard by
a camp fire's light

When he was very small
Not nearly as tall,
as he currently stands
now in height

For a warm bed to sleep in,
a hot home cooked meal,
and some whiskey,
to sooth his old joints

He'd regale me with history
Expound on its mystery
Taking pauses,....
to emphasize points

So I welcomed him in,
long fulfilling a whim,
which I'd had
since I was very young,

and I poured him a drink,
which helped him to think,
as this tale issued forth
from his tongue.

"Some stories are over
before they begin,
but can't start
until someone's begun

To address the desires
of those who've conspired,
and the reasons
they did what they've done

A long time ago,
it was quite apropos,
for a good man
to offer his hand

If a friend was in need,
a close neighbor indeed,
always helped
when occasions demand

But it seemed that one neighbor
would always belabor
any person
who tried to help out,

and except for one man,
named Francis McCan,
all the rest only
offered their doubts

So at least twice a week
our dear Francis would creep
from his bed long before
it was dawn

To do all those chores
his neighbor abhored
since they always
would take him too long

Then one morn it was said
that he found Francis dead
It appeared that his body
had fallen

But with trees not around ,
nothing high could be found
so his neighbor thought
Francis was stalling

He then kicked him hard once
Rolled his fist for a punch
when McCan rose again
from the dead

He finished his chores
before closing the door
after murdering
his neighbor in bed

Here is another one on my "Check your posts" list from away and a long time ago
that seemed to be calling, "look at me, look at me" so I did and found I last posted
on this one back on Aug 5, 2006. Pretty close to the time I left for oblivion and
slowly found my way back.

Oh well, here it is, like a bump, but a good bump........
