Cast In Clay

Post by audiofool » Tue Jun 06, 2017 11:06 pm

You laughed to see
my two feet
cast in clay
then the rain came
and washed your
satisfied smile away

you were amused
by my
eventual decline
my head in a vise
surgical needles
in my spine

you cracked up
when they put me
in a padded room
I danced with
a shovel
made love to
an unyielding broom

what gets me every time
is the way
you show you care
sending sugar kisses
well wishes,
sweet nothings
in the air

you cried me a river
until the banks
overflowed
you went all nuclear
your atom heart
how it glowed

you simpered
and you stammered
and lost control
I guess
easy living has
taken its toll

you cracked up
alone in a
padded room
warm regards
from the outer
reaches of gloom.

What is the significance of the padded room? It's important enough to appear twice in the poem.

A metaphor for coming to question one's sanity, post-breakup. Exaggerated, perhaps.

I'm not sure I planned it this way. Sometimes the verses follow their own rules.

I am rarely in control of where a poem is going. They have a mind of their own (or someone else's altogether). I can see it as a metaphor.
