Forever My Darling

Forever My Darling

" Forever my darling"
Her last words to me
She promised to wait
while I went overseas

No matter how long,
she'd continue to stay
Waiting patiently here,
when I went away

Away to a country
where I'd never been
Where war would assault me,
and other brave men

I'd think of her nightly,
as I'd lay awake
The sound of her voice
making memories ache

"Forever my darling
Comeback to me soon"
She promised to wait
on that warm afternoon

Waiting patiently there,
while I went away
No matter how long
she'd continue to stay

But after the war I felt
bruised, and betrayed
Unlike the young soldiers
who march in parades.

I couldn't imagine how
she could love me
Deciding back then
to remain absentee

I counted the years
by the decades today,
and returned where we stood,
before I went away

"Forever my darling"
Her last words to me,
as I stand by her grave
Where she said she would be
I prefer to keep an open mind,....but not so much that my brains fall out.- Carl Sagan
