Sent in for publication Off to war

Post by Jade » Sun Mar 22, 2009 2:47 pm

I sent this poem into Chicken Soup For True Lover's Soul and was wondering if anyone thinks I might have a chance at getting it published in there.

OFF TO WAR

I closed my eyes, basked myself in the sound
of my mothers voice
as she told me of my father.
How he loved her more than any man
could love a woman.

I never really understood
what she meant when she said
how alive she felt in his arms
Just as I never really understood
how her spirit died as he rode off to war.

He wrote her everyday it seemed.
Every morning She waited for the postman
to tell her that he was ok.
And every evening she would hang
his words
in gold frames on the walls
of her steadily weakening heart.

And time dragged on.
I grew older,
my mom grew colder,
his letters eventually stopped.
I can remember the day mom cried to me
I was only five years old
but I knew that
my Daddy wasn't coming home.

It took almost twenty years
to see what my mom saw
to know what my mom knew.
Today as I watch you board the plane
regretfully I say
I finally understand.

I found the poem rather touching, and yet also mildly chilling near the end. And i think that is a good thing, showing the reality that people face as loved ones head off and may never return.

I found the poem easy to read as well. Sometimes poets overly complicate a poem when i need not be so (which i am very guilty of as well)

I don't see why this wouldn't get published

Nice work.

Great poems.......publishing it in 'chicken soup for the soul' though i would think that it would be better adding something about the love for our country and the reason for the sacrifice for both of the people in love.....though we might not agree with our rulers.........

Simple but tremendously effective writing I see no reason it should not be accepted

Havent heard anything so maybe they didn't like it as much as I had hoped. Thank you everyone for your feedback.
