For the sky so blue
A lilac bloom in springtime
Floating yellow butterfly,
Warm summer lake to swim in,
The pure white of a snowflake.

Enlightenment

Post by burdick » Thu Mar 13, 2003 3:14 pm

Enlightenment

Listen to my stanza:
He who is enlightened, abides in the "Sudden "school,
he who is not, supports the gradual school.
enlightenment changes nothing.
illusion endures.

Ode to a blackspot

Post by burdick » Thu Mar 13, 2003 3:17 pm

Ode to a Blackspot

Today I noticed a black spot
On my toe.
It was like no other before,
And brought me to a new low.

Jaded in old wisdom
And comfortable being
Mortality was of little worry
Until the end of the weaving.

Do I value life more
Or dread death more today?
How can one assess this?
There is so much to weight.

Dark whispers of knowledge..
“Looks like melanoma”.
Calm flies to distinct lands
When faced with carcinoma.

Where is serenity?
When faced with stark reality?
False as a prostitutes passion
Or last years fall fashion.

I await diagnosis
With more than apprehension
For this little necrosis.
Perhaps an invention?

My memories are like
broken glass, once gaudy bottles;
are now , in my minds' eye:
soft jewels on a blinding white beach.

Stop!
Full stop.
Stopping here?

Stage notes: watch Danny Kayes’ movie in which he does punctuation with sound. Use his sound for all punctuation. In addition, on the first line, hold up one finger…the second, two….and the last three. End with a Kaye elaborate bow so that all will know that the end has come.

Enlightenment revisited

Post by burdick » Sat Mar 15, 2003 8:38 am

Enlightenment (revisited)

I move always forward on the stream of time,
Only in my mind can I go upstream.
Mind and brain are yoked as slaves together
In birth and death they agree to mortality.

Thinking, you see, time is naught but movement
And even then, a master of illusion.
The only value of enlightenment
Is to see time , naked, without clothing.

A moment mourned

Post by burdick » Sat Mar 15, 2003 8:40 am

A Moment Mourned

In sun and shade a fat bumblebee seeks.
Sweet grasses and crushed flowers scent the air.
Freezing snow retreats to far distant peaks.
White flees from colors of red and blue rare.

I think of a moment lost in my past,
An enlightenment from insight or disorder.
Brilliant clean light, timeless peace gone too fast.
It is the cold white “now” of all order.

Focus

Post by burdick » Sun Mar 16, 2003 8:18 am

Focus

Allusion leads to confused wisdom and delusion,
leaves the mind confined blind in life intertwined.
Brushing aside the world of illusion,
The dark corridor is left behind

standing there at the open door
Freedom demands lost of self.
Let binding thoughts release.
Now, center yourself.

Meditate in peace.
Seek the numbing,
Blinding white
nothing.

Light!

Objects in Time/space

Post by burdick » Tue Mar 18, 2003 6:01 am

Objects in Time/space

An old man reflects upon his childhood…
Some few favored things have endured his life.
He holds a gaudy Japan vase with care
That he can still see through his boyish sight.

A three-legged iron kettle hangs in display
That once his father used for popping corn,
And his great-grandmother used for farms’ supper.
Its’ value lost in time and in memory.

Vase, pot, some photos, and scraps of paper,
More value perhaps than his dead body-
And certainly easier to remove!
He places them back on the shelf….”later”.

Seasons

Post by burdick » Tue Mar 25, 2003 5:51 am

Seasons

Pleasure in spring is birth and creation,
When a child sees playful rivers for boats.
Things are new and clean, cause for elation.
Rejoice in a riot of bloom and fun!

Pleasure in summer is work and playtime.
The lessons are learned and the tasks begun.
Warmth, sometimes too hot, but movement is fine
For baseball, tennis, or just running!

Pleasure in autumn is thoughtful and plain,
Gather the fruits of your work and give thanks!
The weather is less kind and I feel rain.
Chairs seem more kind now and the days too full.

Pleasure in winter is sleepy and cold.
The leaves are gone, the insects quiet.
Somehow I have moved into being old.
Still, there is rest and the silent darkness!

Laying on the mosque crowned town
Like the smoke of frankincense.
