Part Five

<a name="#one hundred thirty three"> Grim Reminder </a>
Something died in me
I don't know when it started
nor how long the bitter struggle lasted,
But ever it haunts me, wears away and gnaws
Till the last parting gasp choked at the knowing
and released its phantomed call
till finely before me stood my ghost.
It walks the old places
My fields of dreams
between all my reason, sanity
It bears its grim reminder
Of another day's sorrow.
Twine these parting eyes closed
neath the shadowed boughs I knew in youth
and lay forever dreaming the fading melody
that vanished as fast as first made
I cry not for the loss
the ungained truth
but humble myself to the understanding
of what worth the vision held.
