It Can Only Get Better

Post by Tom Watson » Sun Jan 18, 2009 9:31 pm

The smoke rose, wrapping about
The buildings like a diaphanous snake,
Swirling grey, muffling the panicked shouts
Of those whose future seemed to bake…

And burn in the hidden flames.

The pale blue Edsel, lone survivor of the past,
Waited at a distant corner,
Waiting for a scent…that whiffed by at last…
It blew by the odor from the floored container…

Carrying burnt wood, burnt flesh, love’s failures.

The driver, satisfied by her success,
Nodded, closing reddened eyes, and again cried.
Smoke began to suffocate the anger that created the mess,
Dulling the time when sanity had died…

And she ran from the house knowing who to blame.

She had no concern about the oil baron’s gain,
The price per gallon was an unnoticed loss,
Her only concern was to return the pain
To the woman who bedded her husband…his boss…

So, there she sat, tears washing her tortured features.

Near the burning building a man stood, sad faced,
Comforting the lady from her fear, and sorrow,
Because her secretary had just died in her place
Then she turned to him, “And what of tomorrow?”

“If her Edsel’s not there, come in and pick me up.”

The car was half in the street, half on the yard,
As he steeled himself to walk in the door.
His wife’s drugs and alcohol had made it hard,
And his confession was on his lips as he looked to the floor…

Where lay a gun, his wife and note: “It can only get better”

Very powerful, Tom. I feel like Mother Goose in the same room with Victor Hugo.

The sounds of this poem give the piece added power – wonderful internal rhymes and alliteration (one of my favorite emphasizers). You led me through the sinuous corridors of feeling to deposit me at the end. When I finished reading, I just sat quietly slowly taking in the complexity and full weight of the poem. Sort of like a perfume whose top notes are green and spicy and whose dry-down notes are exotic and earthy.

Hats off to you!!

Wow Elaine, thanks a lot.

:book: Well, I am certain Victor would be the one overpowered by your presence after reading such a kind comment..
