Conscience

Post by mdmorash » Sun Apr 10, 2016 8:19 pm

“Here I am, again,” she said. “Do you recall my name?”
I searched within my memories, but found there only shame.
“Can you tell me why”’ she asked, “you asked for me to come?”
I longed to find the words to speak, but found that I’d gone numb.

“May I tell the tale,” she smiled, “the tale you long to hide?”
I felt the heat within my cheeks, the wounding of my pride.
“Do you fear the truth,” she mocked, “of what you really are?”
I tried to turn and run but found that I had come too far.

“Tell me of the need,” she called, “so I may fill the void.”
I could not answer for I knew my words would be destroyed.
“You know why I’ve come,” she hissed, “don’t play with me this night.”
Her words came down upon my chest and washed away my sight.

“Can’t you leave me be,” I cried, “why must you treat me so?”
I felt her warmth within my soul and longed for her to know.
“Let the evil go,” she smiled, “and let the dawning see.”
I took a breath and cried aloud, “My conscience, set me free!”

Humor is the only test of gravity, and gravity of humor; for a subject which will not bear raillery is suspicious, and a jest which will not bear serious examination is false wit.

Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC)

How poor are they who have not patience! What wound did ever heal but by degrees.
-- William Shakespeare
