Ode To Old Maples

Ode To Old Maples

I can hear the gentle trilling of a sparrow
From a maple growing old across the street
Ever since those days that I can first remember
She's stood watch in winter's cold, and summer's heat.

You may think her ancient roots are worn, and narrowed
That her time above this earth is almost past
Ever since those days that I can first remember
She's defied her age, as something she'll outlast.

While her branches hold the nests of mating sparrows
behind canopies of currents colored green
Ever since those days that I can first remember
She has graced the time and seasons that I've seen.

Lovely and elegant! Or as Gray wrote "the hoary head is a crown of glory" equally applicable to Maple Trees.
