Reinventing the Elephant

It was massive, several shades of grey
and fashioned from a single thread
which started at the tip of its tail
and ended near its hideous head.

She caught a skag and gently pulled,
removing kinks along the way,
and wound the great unmentionable
into a skein that packed away.

With silver needles, worn by age
she loops and purls the worsted yarn
and reinvents the center piece
with simple stitch and mending darn.
