THE CLOCK SAT SMUGLY ON THE SHELF

Post by FirestoneFeinberg » Sat Jan 05, 2013 7:05 am

b’’h
1/4/13

The clock sat smugly on the shelf,
As if upon a throne,
Contented with uncounted wealth
Accrued through debtor-loan.

One thousand minutes from the lad
Who tried some time to keep —
Two hundred hours from the maid
Who’d stolen off to sleep —

And twenty days the afternoon
Full washed away by rain —
And thirty weeks — owed by the moon —
For daring so to wane.

Then laughed and laughed the greedy clock,
And selfish sneaked his hands,
As screaming trumpets — tick and tock —
Exclaimed his steep demands.

—Firestone Feinberg

Good one...I like it...nice, abstract view of time.

:hello: David, I enjoyed your poem on time. Your personal view of time speeding past is interesting. It gobbles up our hours faster than we'd sometimes like! And there is nothing we can do to slow it down to our personal pace. Before I can get a few things done, the morning is over! But I must confess that I am a chronic putterer!

Awesome!

Time...such a fascinating subject.

Clocks..the old-time kind...beautiful pieces of art.

Time management...such an oxymoron...like we can ever manage time.

I like how you personify the clock and his demands.

Thank you Darlene for your wonderful comment. I think puttering is a great use of time -- especially since it's what you want to be doing. Whenever I have to clean like the apartment or something, I totally resent the waste of time. I always think 'when I'm on my deathbed will I say "I should have cleaned more?'" I don't think so! Have a great day and a great new year and thanks again!

Thank you so much. I think loads of us poets are time-obsessed. I more or less hate clocks and one day I might murder some. It's that bad. Well anyhow, have a good 'time' while we've got it, eh? Shalom, David

Thank you Ivor! I must admit that this one just burst out -- out of nowhere -- Ifeel like i had little to do with it. I very much appreciate your kind comment and I hope all is well with you and yours, David
