The Silence Of His Own Dismay
The Silence Of His Own Dismay
Between the time worn pages of his books
He kept some tattered pictures that he loved
On shelves where anyone would rarely look
With all his deepest secrets hid above
Sometimes he'd take them down, and fidget through
Those tomes with silent photos from his past
Old friends were seen again in faded hues
Their youth appeared like it would always last
No one but he remained still left alive
The others dead, and buried long ago,
But somehow he had managed to survive
He lived too fast, or death had been too slow
Now in the silence of his own dismay
He yearns for a return to yesterday
Between the time worn pages of his books
He kept some tattered pictures that he loved
On shelves where anyone would rarely look
With all his deepest secrets hid above
Sometimes he'd take them down, and fidget through
Those tomes with silent photos from his past
Old friends were seen again in faded hues
Their youth appeared like it would always last
No one but he remained still left alive
The others dead, and buried long ago,
But somehow he had managed to survive
He lived too fast, or death had been too slow
Now in the silence of his own dismay
He yearns for a return to yesterday

The pathos of reminiscing in stark relief. I don't visit old pictures for that reason. Maybe when I enter my curmudgeon phase, I will.
Evocative piece Gerry, no doubt about someone much, much older than us.

Looking back and missing what once was. Yes, I can relate to that.

Re: The Silence Of His Own Dismay
Another fine poem Bags! Having crossed the continental shelf toward the West of time there are those who wish to remember and others who strive to forget. As for me, there are no pictures on any walls. Everything is vacant except for one clock on the East wall and another on the West. It would be amazingly in tune if it were the clock on the West wall which gave time its final definition.
