Re: S Rhogaire Mo Dhream(royal is my race)

The historiography of the period is fascinating although as an Aussie I can't make any comment on what the poms got up to. But there was always a bit of the rebel in the Scottish, which is probably why they get on so well with us.

Re: ..time..

Hi I have to echo some of the comments made by members of more standing than I have made. If this is a return you certainly took the hard road back. I can see where you're coming from in the work and I think you handled it well but couldn't you have chosen something easier? Like 'Crocodiles' maybe? ...

Re: A Weasel in my Pants

Baggsy baby, listen mate
Why ARE you making such
A song and dance about your fate
'Cause weasels don't eat much

Good one mate. We don't have weasels down under. Looks like you did though!

BAGS123 This is just for YOU mate! (LOL)

The Devil made me do it! Bags123 now list to me I'll tell my tale to you The Aussie's me (or I am he) I'm not sure which is who It matters not a single jot, 'cause Aussies still live free And modern town or outback brown it's all the same to me Nowadays I rarely sing (as all agree a damn good thing)...

Re: Workshop: What makes it poetry?

OK for me writing was never 'art' or 'culture' it was something I once had to do virtually under duress - and no, I'm not talking about school. Now there's always some debate about what 'poetry' is and isn't. Is it the highly disciplined and ultimately beautiful series of words we call a sonnet? Is ...

Mates - a Petrarchan sonnet in the Australian vernacular

Mates 'Gooday there mate an' 'ow yer goin eh? He drops his hat and grabs his 'workin gear' And grins and finds a stump to 'park 'is rear' Let's 'ave a brew an' see what's on terday We speak of steel and flame and jobs astray As men will speak with only men to hear We speak of mates and kids and fish...

On Dark Poetry

I read your lines and share your pain and pain I comprehend, I know of loss and tears unshed and life and death and hate. I've seen red war and fire and flood and wished that it would end And dealt with lies and wounding words and deeds I can't relate. I know death well, the face, the smell, I know ...

And now for something completely ridiculous...

On Overindulgence! We're leaving the bay, going out for the day on a search for a nibble or two So pick up your hat and don't eat the cat 'cause there's plenty of room here for you With a merry 'Yo Ho!' and it's off that we go with a pound and a quarter of cheese And some 'Ointment of Mint' (of a ho...

Queensland January 2011

Branches stark against a blazing sky And creek beds dry and broken as in pain We watched our thirsting cattle slowly die And begged and prayed the healing gift of rain Branches stark against a sky of lead Torrents now that once were vanished streams Homes are gone, and cattle floating dead And dead ...

On Growing Old

Age How they fly, my days, my life near done Fleeting, fleeting like a passing dream. My time is gone, my race is nearly run My dawn long past, now sunset's ruddy gleam. When I was young, oh! all the world was wide Newbright and shining, every day was gold And time was endless, so it seemed in pride...

My Wife

My Love Unsilvered still my lover's midnight hair And all the many years could not displace Her gentleness, her flowing, lissome grace Untouched by time, unravaged yet by care. Beloved one, who plucked me from despair My safest harbour 'gainst the terrored night My succour 'till the morning's welcom...

Inspiration? No such luck!

Hi The paper's blank, the pen runs dry And all I do is sit and sigh... It would be easy (so I thought) To write the work the world has sought To catch a star and raise it high (And watch the public buy and buy) My dear wife smiles and says I ought To start again - a different sort! But words won't c...

Just me.

A little background There is a box and locked within A demon, grim and fell A box of bone and pallid skin A box come straight from Hell And for the lock there is a key A key of fire and pain The prisoned demon calls to me And calls, again, again The demon begs release denied I dare not touch the key...
